In December of 2006 our founder Jeff Cohen was trying to find a way to satisfy his craving for sweets without spiking his blood sugar.  Using the Glycemic Index as a guide, Jeff identified low Glycemic Index ingredients that could make up a low Glycemic Index snack.

As a Diabetic he cares about sugar and reducing it’s impact as much as possible. Jeff’s family experimented with the ingredients and created Granola Bars. Over the next six months the recipe was refined eliminating sugar and replacing it with Raw Blue Agave and Honey, Granola Bars became an awesome snack.

Jeff’s 10 and 15 year old sons were taking 3 to 6 bars a day to school because their friends liked them so much. Then Jeff’s Endocrinologist (also a diabetic) Dr. Michael Harris, Director of Diabetes, Cedars Sinai Medical Group compared its Glycemic Impact and how it matched up to other popular bars he normally ate. He found the Glycemic Impact was lower with the bars we formulated. The bars are: High in Fiber High in Omega 3’s and Antioxidants, Low in Fat and have NO Sodium.  They are all Natural & each bar includes: Organic/Raw Blue Agave, Honey, Almonds, Organic Flax Seeds, Organic Sunflower Seeds & Organic Oats.

A close friend of Jeff’s brought some to Warner Brothers lot in Burbank and the TV Shows that were filming began purchasing the bars for the cast and crew.  In our first month we sold almost 100 boxes of Granola Gourmet Granola Bars to the Warner Brothers Lot.

The momentum was so strong that we quickly found a great Catering Company in Santa Clarita to make the Granola Bars for us and were now in a position to handle the growing demand.  Our new website was up by the end of November 2007 and we’ve been receiving Internet orders regularly since.

In May 2008 we were accepted by the American Diabetes Association as a company that can participate in their Expo.  The Expo was a great success, Diabetics from Southern California converged on the Long Beach Convention Center and lined up for samples of the Gourmet Granola Bars.

By the end of 2008 Granola Gourmet was in most of the Whole Foods Markets in Southern CA and a number of Independent Natural food Stores.  Look out 2009 here we come!
